Students will have the opportunity to express their learning in a range of formats and mediums.
Pacific Studies (A/T/M) is a course that provides students with the opportunity to explore and understand the diversity of Pacific peoples, places and experiences. It provides Pacific Islander students an opportunity to engage with their learning through the close study of their heritage, and non-Pacific Islander students an opportunity to learn more about the vast sea of islands covering one third of the globe.
Students engage with indigenous Pacific ways of knowing, thinking, being, doing and valuing. They develop a culturally appropriate research skills to explore a range of topics and issues related to Pacific Islander peoples, places and cultures. Students appreciate their own culture and other cultures and will develop intercultural skills in moving between cultures and cultural understanding by learning about other ways of life.
Students in Pacific Studies have the opportunity to engage with a range of sources and perspectives to critically analyse the history, environment, geography, literature, communities, linguistics traditions, arts and popular culture of the region. They reflect on their own identity and relationships to communities in the Pacific. Students learn to use key terms in languages that reveal important concepts and ways of knowing, thinking, being, doing and valuing.
Students will be supported to become lifelong learners and knowledgeable citizens in relation to the Pacific. They will become culturally aware and competent to learn through communicating and interacting respectfully. Students use this learning as they engage with Pacific Islander peoples and cultures in Australia and internationally.
The course is made up of the following units:
- Places and Origins
- The Modern Pacific
- Pacific Peoples and Communities
- Pacific Popular Culture
- Independent Study
Schools will determine if they wish to offer the course. Schools will be able to offer the Pacific Studies course with A, T, and/or M accreditation. There are a range of enriching learning experiences available to students undertaking the course at all classifications. The T course provides strong preparation for a range of tertiary course areas, including Pacific Studies programs at university.
The BSSS will provide a range of professional learning for teachers and school interested in the course in cooperation with Pasifika experts and teachers. The BSSS will also coordinate a supportive network of schools and teachers who are planning to offer the course. Course developers and the Cultural Reference Group have also prepared an Implementation Guide to support teachers in delivering the course.

Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools
Posted on 04 Dec 2023
The Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Schools will be implemented from Term 1 2024 – providing guidance on understanding, using and responding to generative AI in Australian school-based education.
To support ACT Senior Secondary teachers and students in implementing this Framework, the BSSS has created a guide for our context. This guide is written to help teachers and students engage with some of the key responsibilities and implications of the Framework; it includes summaries of what AI can do, how it might potentially be used in education, elaborations on the responsibilities of teachers and students under the Framework, and a survey of the major issues touched on by the Framework. The document includes links to resources, strategies and ideas to help schools with the implementation of both the Framework, and AI itself. Teachers and students should check with their school and/or sector’s ICT policies before making decisions about the use of AI in educational settings.

Shape of Moderation
Posted on 03 May 2022
The Shape of ACT Quality Assurance – System Moderation Report outlines a model to enhance processes to support the quality and comparability of grade judgements across schools and building teacher capacity to develop high quality assessment.
In 2018, the Board endorsed recommendations made by a cross sectorial committee. The purpose of this review was to examine existing BSSS assessment and moderation policies and procedures to determine if changes are required to meet future needs within a continuous school-based assessment and consensus peer-based moderation system. The Office of the Board of Senior Secondary Studies has worked in collaboration with senior secondary teachers to implement these recommendations.
The report proposes a multidimensional strategy for BSSS Moderation Day with the following key features:
- a range of moderation tasks including student portfolio unit grade agreement, moderation of individual assessment tasks, blind moderation of single or multiple assessment tasks, assessment instrument review and evaluation of a program of learning
- targeted and automated moderation processes (i.e. flexible moderation cycle and processes which encompass years 11/12 work across Semester 1-4 including item by item and wholistic moderation)
- provision of annotated assessment tasks and student work informed by the BSSS Achievement Standards and Quality Assessment Guidelines.
The full report can be viewed here: BSSS Shape of Moderation Report for Public Consultation
